This year, we’re celebrating 60 years of Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham – marking six decades of providing friendship, support and a true sense of home for adults later in life across our communities.

As we celebrate this important milestone, we are also reflecting on the remarkable story of the wider Abbeyfield movement, which marks 70 years since its foundation in 1956. What began as one man’s response to loneliness has grown into an international network of communities dedicated to helping older people live independently while enjoying companionship and support.

The Beginning of Abbeyfield

The Abbeyfield story started with Richard Carr-Gomm, a former Army officer who once leaving military service became one of Britain’s first male home-help volunteers. During his visits to older people living alone, he noticed that many were not struggling financially but were experiencing something equally challenging: loneliness.

Determined to make a difference, Carr-Gomm used his Army gratuity to purchase a house at 50 Eugenia Road in Bermondsey, London. His vision was simple but powerful: create a home where older people could have their own rooms, maintain their independence, and enjoy the companionship of living alongside others.

The idea quickly proved successful. More houses followed, and by 1956 the first five houses had been brought together to form The Abbeyfield Society. Within just a few years, communities across the UK were embracing the model, helping older people remain active members of their neighbourhoods while enjoying friendship, security and support.

A Vision That Still Matters Today

At the heart of Abbeyfield’s founding vision was the belief that adults in later life deserves to feel valued, connected and at home. Residents were encouraged to bring their own furniture, continue their hobbies, welcome family and friends, and remain part of their local community—a philosophy that continues to guide Abbeyfield today.

Over the past 70 years, the movement has grown from a single house in London into an international organisation supporting older people in communities around the world. Yet its founding purpose remains unchanged: tackling loneliness and creating places where people can enjoy companionship, dignity and belonging.

For Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham, 2026 represents a special opportunity to celebrate our own history as part of this wider story. For 60 years, we have been proud to provide welcoming homes and supportive communities for older people across Bristol and Keynsham.

Our anniversary celebrations have already begun with wonderful events at Abbeyfield House, Redland and Abbeyfield House, Keynsham, where residents, staff, volunteers, families and friends came together to share memories, laughter and friendship.

As we look back on six decades of local service and seven decades of the Abbeyfield movement, we thank everyone who has contributed to our journey. Together, we celebrate a legacy built on kindness and community — and look forward to continuing that mission for generations to come.
