The Joy of Giving Back: Insight into an Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham Trustee
To celebrate national Trustees’ Week 2025, we spoke with one of our wonderful Trustees, Rob Kinsman, to find out why he chose to give his time and expertise to Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham and what he enjoys about being a trustee.
Rob’s professional journey began with a property degree and a career as a chartered surveyor. But it was a shift two decades ago into the social care sector that truly shaped his path. Working with care homes and specialised housing, Rob developed a deep understanding of the needs of later living and the importance of creating spaces that continue to help people thrive later in life.
Over the years, Rob has helped clients buy and sell properties in the care sector, combining his technical expertise with a heartfelt commitment to improving lives of people later in life. His dedication to service extended beyond work—he volunteered with the Samaritans and coached rugby, finding joy and connection in giving back.
It was after these came to an end that Rob came across a Trustee opportunity at Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham. The opportunity resonated immediately. Abbeyfield’s mission to combat loneliness and provide supportive housing aligned perfectly with Rob’s values and experience. With strong local knowledge of Bristol and a desire to make a difference in his own community, joining Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham as a Trustee felt like a natural fit.

Why Being a Trustee Matters
For Rob, being a Trustee is about more than governance—it’s about impact. He draws on his business and property background to support Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham, and recently enjoyed supporting the refurbishment of Abbeyfield House, Henleaze. Trusteeship offers a flexible way to contribute, with projects that ebb and flow, allowing Rob to stay engaged while balancing other commitments.
Most importantly, it’s a chance to help end loneliness. Rob believes that everyone deserves companionship and community, especially in later life. Through his role, he helps ensure that Abbeyfield homes are not just places to live, but places to thrive.

The Joy of Giving Back
What Rob enjoys most is seeing the difference Abbeyfield makes first-hand. Visiting the houses, attending BBQs and Christmas celebrations, and witnessing residents laughing and connecting—these moments are deeply rewarding. For many residents, Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham has transformed their lives, replacing isolation with friendship and joy.
Rob’s story is a testament to the power of volunteering and the impact of local action. Through his work with Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham, he continues to build a stronger, more connected community—one happy home at a time.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our Trustees for giving their time and expertise to support Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham.
