Welcome to the Hidden Treasures Podcast
Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham and Abbeyfield England presents: Hidden Treasures. A new podcast series that reflects on the ideas, people and values that have shaped the Abbeyfield movement for 70 years — and asks why something so special has remained one of the best kept secrets.

As Abbeyfield marks its 70th anniversary and Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham marks it’s 60th year, this opening conversation looks back to 1956, when founder Richard Carr-Gomm opened the first Abbeyfield house in Bermondsey. His simple belief — that people are better off living together in community rather than alone — grew into a movement of Abbeyfield societies supporting older people to live independently while staying connected.
In this debut episode, ‘Welcome to Abbeyfield’, our Chief Executive Adam Rees and Michele Wainwright, General Secretary of Abbeyfield England, explore how Abbeyfield’s founding principles continue to shape Abbeyfield societies today, and why Abbeyfield is so often described as “the best kept secret” — and why it’s time more people knew who we are and what we do.

The episode also features reflections from Sue Perry, former Chief Executive of Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham. Sue shares personal memories of Richard Carr-Gomm and offers insight into the values that have endured across generations, reflecting the deep sense of commitment that runs through the Abbeyfield movement.
Throughout the conversation, Michele and Adam reflect on the role Abbeyfield societies play within their local communities, the importance of volunteers and staff, and the many “hidden treasures” that make Abbeyfield houses special — from shared meals and companionship to independence, dignity and belonging in later life.
This first episode sets the tone for the series: thoughtful, warm and rooted in real experiences. It is both a celebration of the Abbeyfield movement’s past and a statement of intent for its future — opening the door and inviting more people to discover what Abbeyfield is all about.
