Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham Society has four communal retirement houses all offering independent yet supported living for older people. Residents live independently in their self contained flat, but enjoy the support and reassurance from our staff as well as a varied programme of activities, the companionship of their neighbours and a full menu of homecooked meals daily.

House Manager

Abbeyfield House, Redland, Bristol

We are currently recruiting for a House Manager at our Redland House. The position is a permanent one but is subject to a six month probationary period, a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) and 2 satisfactory references.  

The House Manager is responsible to the Society’s Trustees through its Chief Executive Officer. Redland House has 17 one-bedroom and studio flats. The House Manager has the ultimate responsibility for the day to day running of the house.

Principal Duties:

  1. To be responsible for the staffing rotas for the house and ensure an adequate complement of staff at all times.
  2. To liaise with the Abbeyfield office with regard to the visits of prospective new residents to the house.
  3. Accountability of the smooth running of the kitchen, including health and safety, and hygiene.
  4. Accountability for hygiene throughout the house and housekeeping staff.
  5. To liaise with the Abbeyfield office and the House Committee with regard to the visits of prospective new residents to the house.
  6. To keep a caring and supportive eye on residents, liaising as appropriate with:
  • Domiciliary care services
  • Relatives
  • Primary health care professionals
  • Hospitals
  • Registered Residential Care or Nursing Homes
  • The voluntary House Committee
  • New residents
  1. To ensure effective supervision, appraisals and communication with all staff, alongside staff development.
  2. To organise and promote a varied and stimulating programme of activities for the residents.
  3. Responsibility for actively promoting community engagement.
  4. To ensure the safety and well-being of residents at all times, and to review procedures continually to maintain the very highest standards of support.
  5. To liaise with the Abbeyfield Office to ensure accurate payment of staff wages, accurate payment of household invoices and accurate management of Petty Cash.
  6. Responsibility for fire safety and maintaining fire safety records.
  7. Maintaining all necessary paperwork (e.g. accident book, fire checks, support plans, admission forms, hospital admission forms, risk assessments, accident forms, COSSH sheets etc.).
  8. Ensuring the fabric of the building and the gardens are well-maintained and liaising with other colleagues in this regard, as appropriate.
  9. In the event of a health crisis, such as COVID-19, the House Manager must ensure that they are following and promoting procedures for testing and health and safety in accordance with government and Society guidelines.
  10. To undertake any other ad hoc duties required by the Society’s Chief Executive.
  11. To act in the best interests of Abbeyfield and its residents at all times and maintain strict confidentiality in Abbeyfield matters.

Terms of Employment: 

40 hours per week with some flexibility, but a responsibility to ensure that the house is covered during office hours Monday-Friday. (You are entitled to a hot meal whilst on duty)

Remuneration

Salary & Pension : Starting at £30k (5.5% employer pension contribution).

Payable calendar monthly in arrears on the 28th of the month or the previous working day if the 28th falls at a weekend or Bank Holiday.  Your salary will be subject to the usual statutory deductions, if eligible

Holidays

28 days per annum to include 8 bank holidays, pro rata for those working part-time.

 Personal Specification

  • Experience at a Management level in a health or social care setting.
  • A caring person who is empathetic and understands the needs of older people.
  • Able to communicate and interact well with a wide range of people in varied situations.
  • Patient with the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
  • Able to read, write and work with numbers to a good standard with experience of accurate record keeping.
  • Good with information technology; you’ll need to use IT systems.
  • A strong and supportive leader and supervisor.
  • Able to work on your own initiative and under pressure in a diverse and changing environment.
  • Willing and dedicated to carry out training courses and qualifications.

Desirable 

  • Experience at a Management level, working with older people.
  • Either qualified to Level 3 in Management or equivalent or willing to undertake this training.

General Assistant, Abbeyfield House, Redland

General Information

The General Assistant assists the House Manager in an Abbeyfield House and helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.   The aims of the Society are:

  • To provide support and companionship for older people
  • To make the house a focal point for the community

Principal Duties

  • To assist with the serving of lunch and clearing up afterwards.
  • To help cook lunch and prepare tea as required.
  • To assist with keeping the day room, dining room and communal areas clean and tidy.
  • To ensure compliance with Health and Safety requirements.
  • Any other duties as required by the House Manager on a day to day or ad-hoc basis, such as some administrative tasks etc.
  • Responsibility for providing and promoting an active programme of activities for residents alongside your colleagues.
  • To maintain confidentiality and act in the best interests of the Society at all times.
  • In the event of a health crisis, such as COVID-19, you must ensure that you are following procedures for testing and health and safety in accordance with government and Society guidelines.

Remuneration

£10.42 per hour, payable calendar monthly in arrears on the 28th of the month or the previous working day if the 28th falls at a weekend or Bank Holiday.  Your salary will be subject to the usual statutory deductions, if eligible. All staff salaries are paid through the Banks Automated Clearance System (BACS).

Hours of Work

Your usual working hours are normally:  10am – 2pm Alternate weeks (Monday – Friday). Additional hours of work may be agreed with you by the House Manager.

Holidays

You are entitled to pro-rata holiday pay based on the full time holiday entitlement per year of 20 days plus 8 Bank Holidays.

Personal Specification

  • A caring person who is compassionate and understands the needs of older people.
  • Able to communicate and interact well with a wide range of people in varied situations.
  • Able to read, write and work with numbers to a good standard.
  • Have at least basic IT skills; you’ll sometimes need to use IT systems.
  • A strong and supportive team player.
  • A clear DBS certificate entitling you to work in a regulated environment.

Experience

  • Are experienced in working in a similar role.
  • Are experienced in working within services for older people.
