Casual General Assistant

CASUAL GENERAL ASSISTANT – HANHAM

Calling to the local Hanham community! We have an exciting opportunity for a casual general assistant to join our friendly and dedicated team at our house on Memorial Road.

General Information

The General Assistant assists the House Manager in an Abbeyfield House and helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.   The aims of the Society are:

  • To provide support and companionship for older people
  • To make the house a focal point for the community

Principal Duties

  • To assist with the serving of lunch and clearing up afterwards.
  • To help cook lunch and prepare tea as required.
  • To assist with keeping the day room, dining room and communal areas clean and tidy.
  • To ensure compliance with Health and Safety requirements.
  • Any other duties as required by the House Manager on a day to day or ad-hoc basis, such as some administrative tasks etc.
  • Responsibility for providing and promoting an active programme of activities for residents alongside your Colleagues.
  • To maintain confidentiality and act in the best interests of the Society at all times.
  • In the event of a health crisis, such as COVID-19, you must ensure that you are following procedures for testing and health and safety in accordance with government and Society guidelines.

 Remuneration

£11.44 per hour, payable calendar monthly in arrears on the 28th of the month or the previous working day if the 28th falls at a weekend or Bank Holiday.  Your salary will be subject to the usual statutory deductions, if eligible. All staff salaries are paid through the Banks Automated Clearance System (BACS).

Hours of Work

Shifts available to cover staff sickness and holidays, to be agreed by the House Manager.

Holidays

Holiday pay will be based on 12.07% of your actual casual gross pay.

Personal Specification

  • A caring person who is compassionate and understands the needs of older people.
  • Able to communicate and interact well with a wide range of people in varied situations.
  • Able to read, write and work with numbers to a good standard.
  • Have at least basic IT skills; you’ll sometimes need to use IT systems.
  • A strong and supportive team player.
  • A clear DBS certificate entitling you to work in a regulated environment.

Experience

  • Are experienced in working in a similar role.
  • Are experienced in working within services for older people.

NIGHT SUPPORT – KEYNSHAM

We’re now recruiting for a Night Support worker to join our small, friendly team in our lovely established supported house for older people (maximum capacity: 14) in Abbeyfield House, Keynsham. Interested?  Contact us now to find out more about this great opportunity!

General Information

The Night Support assists the House Manager in their absence by covering the running of the house in the evening and throughout the night and helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.   The aims of the Abbeyfield Society are:

  • To provide support and companionship for older people
  • To make the house a focal point for the community

Principal Duties

Assisting the House Manager to ensure an adequate complement of staff at all times including the arranging of appropriate relief cover for time off, holiday and sickness absence.

To keep a caring and supportive eye on residents, liaising as appropriate with:

  • Domiciliary care services
  • Relatives
  • Primary health care professionals
  • Hospitals
  • Registered Residential Care or Nursing Homes
  • The voluntary House Committee
  • Visitors
  • New residents, including providing house tours

The Night Support will have responsibility when on duty for:

  • Health, safety and food hygiene matters
  • Fire prevention/precaution
  • Maintaining all necessary paperwork (eg Accident book/residents’ Day Book)
  • Liaising with the House Manager, Houskeeper, Maintenance Manager and Catering staff.
  • Liaising with the Society’s Chief Executive and the Abbeyfield office as appropriate.

Dealing with any resident emergencies whilst on duty, ensuring appropriate liaison with other members of staff, relatives and the Abbeyfield office.

To assist in the serving and clearing of tea/supper. Clean and freshen the dining room and other communal areas and set-up for the next morning.

To complete residents’ service washes/laundry as required.

To organise and run a program of activities for residents.

To undertake morning and evening checks of residents where required, and provide a comprehensive written communication as a thorough hand-over to the next member of staff on duty.

Such other duties as the House Manager or the Society’s Chief Executive shall decide.

To maintain confidentiality and act in the best interests of The Society at all times.

Remuneration

£11.44 per hour.   Food is provided whilst on duty (eg self-prepared breakfast and high tea/supper with the residents).

(Note – During On-Call hours, staff are permitted to use the ‘Sleeping in’ room, but are on-call to attend to resident / other emergencies – staff are therefore required to stay on site. There is no additional payment when staff are called out during their On-Call period, there is a flat payment of £11.44 per hour through the entirety of your shift).

Hours and Day of work

Alternate weeks, Friday Saturday and Sunday (5pm Day 1 – 9am Day 2)

Day 1

Active duty:   5.00 pm – 9.00 pm;  On-call: 9.00 pm – 8.00 am (Day 2)

Day 2

Active duty: 8.00 am – 9.00 am

Holidays

You are entitled to pro-rata holiday pay based on the full time holiday entitlement per year of 20 days plus 8 Bank Holidays.
