Celebrating Our Heroes On VE Day

Mr John McGrory is a resident who lives at Abbeyfield House in Redland, and who played an essential role in Operation Manna – a week long food drop to starving Dutch people 75 years ago.

He was a Lancaster pilot at the time and actually received a medal of remembrance from the Kingdom of the Netherlands last year in recognition of the part he played. You can see him holding his medal of remembrance in the photo.

The second photo is of the Lancaster Crew at RAF Scampton on Aug 6th 1945. 625 Squadron. From Left. P/O David Parry-Davis, Flight Engineer. Flt/Sgt Lew McKenzie, Navigator. Sgt James Boubert, WOP. Flt/ Sgt Jack Carline, Bomb Aimer. Flt/lt John McGrory, Pilot. Flt/Sgt Les Henshaw, AG. Sitting, Flt/Sgt John Logan, AG.

We thought you might also like to see John’s flying log book, with details of the food drops as part of Operation Manna.

Thank you to John’s son, Roger McGrory, who sent us these wonderful photos and was interviewed on the radio last week as part of the VE Day celebrations. You can listen to the interview here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p089jgcc

John is a real hero with an incredible story, and a true gentleman. We are very lucky to have him living in one of our Abbeyfield Houses.

We hope you enjoy these photos.
