1. PART-TIME COOK

We’re now recruiting for a Part-time Cook to join our small, friendly team in our lovely supported house for older people (maximum capacity: 14) in Westbourne Avenue, Keynsham.

DUTIES

Your principal duties will be as follows:

Quality of Work

  • To prepare menus in liaison with the General Manager ensuring strict budgetary control.
  • To ensure all necessary food and cleaning materials are ordered each week in consultation with the General Manager.
  • To prepare and cook enough food to provide a wide customer choice, with minimum wastage.
  • To check food for taste, appearance and quality, before serving.
  • To make sure food is attractively garnished.
  • To ensure good stock control, that deliveries are the correct temperature, quantity and quality and are stored quickly and appropriately
  • To complete paperwork (eg to record the amount of food produced and wasted, temperature charts, stock sheets and cleaning rotas).
  • To ensure the kitchen and service areas are clean, tidy and attractive. To keep storage areas clean and tidy and ensure stock rotation. To report equipment defects to the General Manager immediately.
  • Any other catering duties at the request of the General Manager or her Deputy.
  • To act in the best interests of Abbeyfield at all times.

 

Resident Satisfaction (in consultation with the General Manager)

  • To greet residents and be polite and friendly at all times.
  • Deal with individual resident requests.
  • Listen to resident remarks politely and implement appropriate suggestions.
  • To make sure you know all about the food you are preparing and cooking.
  • To help residents choose what they would like to eat.
  • To ensure compliance with reasonable resident diets.

 

Flexibility/Initiative

  •  To be prepared to help by doing other things in the home when necessary.
  • To see where you need to change your own activities to meet different circumstances.
  • To look out for and tell the Manager when you see ways to improve work activities or reduce costs.

To cover in other Abbeyfield Bristol houses when required

 

Teamwork

  • To be friendly, pleasant and polite to your work colleagues.
  • Be prepared to help out the rest of the team in a willing and positive manner.
  • Tell your colleagues what is going on in the unit and be prepared to go to training sessions.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times.

 

Health, Safety & Hygiene

  • To make sure you meet the legal and Company requirements for fire, safety, health and hygiene.
  • To look out for problems with safety or hygiene and report them to the General Manager.

 

Attendance and Time-Keeping

To come to work regularly and give as much notice as possible to the General Manager if for some reason you are unable to attend for your shift.

 

HOURS OF WORK

 35 hours per fortnight. On a 2-weekly rota basis, 2 days one week and 5 days the following week.

1.30pm – 6.30pm

 

RATE OF PAY

£10.48 per hour, paid calendar monthly in arrears.

 

HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT

28 days per annum to include bank holidays; pro rata for those working part-time.

 

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

The successful candidate will have had professional training or experience and will hold a Food Hygiene qualification. 

Interest in and experience with older people will be an advantage but is not essential.

2. CASUAL NIGHT SUPPORT 

We’re now recruiting for a Casual Night Support Worker to join our small, friendly team in our lovely established retirement house for older people (maximum capacity: 25) on Westbury Road in Henleaze. Interested?  Contact us now to find out more about this great opportunity!

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

1          To keep a caring and supportive eye on residents, liaising as appropriate with:

  • Domiciliary care services
  • Relatives
  • Primary health care professionals, hospitals and Registered Residential Care or Nursing Homes

2          He/she will have responsibility when on duty for:

  • Health, safety and food hygiene matters
  • Fire prevention/precaution
  • Maintaining all necessary paperwork (eg Accident book/residents’ Day Book)
  • Liaising with the House Manager, Cook and Head Office.

3          To deal with any resident emergencies whilst on duty, ensuring appropriate liaison with relatives, other members of staff and Head Office, and recording details as necessary.

4          To assist in the serving and clearing of tea/supper. Clean and freshen the dining room and other communal areas and set-up for the next morning.

5          To complete residents’ service washes/laundry as required.

6          To assist residents in completing their Support Plans and other ad-hoc administration duties, as required by the House Manager.

7          To organise and run a program of activities for residents.

8          To undertake morning and evening checks of residents where required, and provide a comprehensive written communication as a thorough hand-over to the next member of staff on duty.

9          To undertake any other such other duties as the House Manager or the Society’s Chief Executive shall decide and to act in the best interests of The Society at all times.

10        To cover in other Abbeyfield houses when required, by mutual agreement.

 

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

The successful candidate will be good at dealing with people, be compassionate, calm and pro-active.   Previous experience with older people will be an advantage but is not essential.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 Rate of Pay

£7.83 per hour (£133.11 per shift), paid calendar monthly in arrears with annual review in April.  

Food is provided whilst on duty (eg self-prepared breakfast and high tea/supper with the residents).

(Note – During On-Call hours, staff are permitted to use the ‘Sleeping in’ room, but are on-call to attend to resident / other emergencies – staff are therefore required to stay on site. There is no additional payment when staff are called out during their On-Call period, there is a flat payment of £7.83 per hour through the entirety of your shift).

Hours of Work: 1 Shift

Day 1

Active duty:   4.00 pm – 9.00 pm;  On-call: 9.00 pm – 8.00 am (Day 2)

Day 2

Active duty: 8.00 am – 9.00 am

Nights of Work

As and when required, to cover sickness and holiday

Holidays

Holiday pay will be based on 1/13th of hours actually worked.  Bank holidays when worked will be paid at time-and-a-half

 

4.  CASUAL DAY SUPPORT

1          To keep a caring and supportive eye on residents, liaising as appropriate with:

  • Domiciliary care services
  • Relatives
  • Primary health care professionals

  • The voluntary House Committee
  • New residents

2          He/she will have responsibility when on duty for:

  • Health, safety and food hygiene matters
  • Fire prevention/precaution
  • Maintaining all necessary paperwork (eg Accident book/residents’ Day Book)
  • Liaising with the General Manager and Catering staff.
  • Liaising with the Society’s Chief Executive and the Abbeyfield office as appropriate.

3          To assist in supervision of residents’ medication provided a monitored dosage system is used

4          Dealing with any resident emergencies whilst on duty, ensuring appropriate liaison with other members of staff, the House Committee and the Abbeyfield office

5          To assist in serving of lunch, eating with the residents.

6          Such other duties as the House Manager, House Committee or the Society’s Chief Executive shall decide.

7          To act in the best interests of Abbeyfield at all times.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 Salary

The rate of pay is £10.75 per hour, paid calendar monthly in arrears with annual cost-of-living increases in April.   Food is provided whilst on duty.

Holiday pay will be based on 1/13th of hours actually worked.  Bank holidays when worked will be paid at time-and-a-half.

Hours of Work

Hours of work to suit house and staff, to be agreed with House Manager.

The Day Support Worker is required to remain on the premises during these periods.
