Meet our newest resident to come and rent a retirement flat at Abbeyfield House in Henleaze, Elizabeth (Betty). A keen gardener, she came to live with us only 2 months ago. Her retirement flat overlooks the garden, of which she is already very proud. Each morning, the first thing Betty does is grab her secateurs and head for the back door.
“I love it here because they just allow me to potter”, she smiles, “It’s home”.
Before she came to us, Betty was living in a flat run by a different organisation. However, no meals were provided and there was no communal space, “Even though there were over 60 flats, I never saw anyone. I’d never been so lonely in my life”. Betty has Parkinsons and so struggles with some simple tasks. Sadly, she was starting to lose her confidence.
We are delighted that it took her no time at all to settle into her Abbeyfield house and we are over the
moon with her gardening passion. Betty has already galvanised some of the other residents into action for Abbeyfield’s “Doorstep Challenge” competition, and as you can see from the photos, they were kept very busy indeed this week.
Originally from Downend, Betty hasn’t been fazed by the move to a new area. She regularly attends the local church, St Peter’s Church Henleaze, and attends a monthly meeting for Parkinson’s UK Society. She also goes to the Henleaze gardening club once a week … so it looks like it isn’t just us, who’ll benefit from her green fingers – we’ll be admiring her hard work on the high street too.
It’s great to hear Betty praise our team members, “I can’t fault the staff here. They mother you – and in a lovely way.”, she laughs. “When I was feeling under the weather recently, they were bringing me cups of tea and just popped in for chats. I’ve got my lovely flat, but when you wake up in the middle of the night, it’s good to know there’s someone around if I need them”.
Thank you Betty – and good luck with the Doorstep Challenge! And if you want to know more about living in an Abbeyfield house, you can go straight to our Contact page here. We’d love to hear from you.
